Bengali Wedding Trends
Bengali Weddings are super fun and very different in terms of their rituals and traditions. Here are the list of different rituals in Bengali wedding:
- Adan Pradan – Finalization of the Date: Families meet with priests to finalize the date based on the Hindu panjika. Gifts may be exchanged.
- Ashirbaad – The Blessing: Both families bless the bride and groom with rice, trefoil leaves, and jewelry. Often followed by a meal.
- Aiburo-bhaat – Last Meal as Unmarried: Held the day before the wedding, the bride and groom enjoy favorite dishes in their respective homes.
- Nitbor & Nitkone – Wedding Companions: Young relatives accompany the bride and groom throughout the ceremonies, showered with love and gifts.
- Shankha-Pola – Sign of Marriage: The bride starts wearing conch shell (shankha) and coral (pola) bangles before the wedding.
- Ganga Nimantran – Inviting the River Ganga: Family members symbolically invite the holy river with rituals near a water body.
- Dodhi Mangal – Daybreak Meal: Bride and groom eat sweet yogurt and flattened rice early in the morning of the wedding day.
- Nandi Mukh – Homage to Ancestors: A priest-led Vedic ritual in which the bride and groom honor their forefathers.
- Gaye Holud – Turmeric Ceremony: Turmeric is applied first to the groom, then the same is sent to the bride, along with a saree and gifts.
- Tatta – Gift Exchange: Decorated trays filled with clothes, cosmetics, food, and more are exchanged between families.
- Bor Boron – Welcoming the Groom: Bride’s mother welcomes the groom with sweets, water, and a lamp.
- Patta Bastra – Sacred Attire: Groom receives traditional wedding attire from the bride’s family before rituals begin.
- Subho Drishti – First Auspicious Glance: Bride is brought on a wooden stool and circles the groom seven times before revealing her face.
- Mala Bodol – Exchange of Garlands: The couple exchanges garlands three times in a fun-filled moment.
- Sampradan – Induction into Groom’s Family: Equivalent to Kanyadaan, bride’s hand is placed in the groom’s hand with Vedic chants.
- Yagna – Sacred Fire: Bride and groom sit before the fire and perform rituals making Agni the divine witness.
- Saptapadi – Seven Steps: Bride steps on seven betel leaves while the groom follows moving a grinding stone forward.
- Anjali – Offering to Fire: Bride’s brother gives puffed rice which she offers to the fire along with the groom.
- Sindoor Daan – Vermillion Ceremony: Groom applies sindoor to the bride's hair parting; her face is then covered with a new saree.
- Bashor Jaaga – Interactive Session: Fun games and songs are held post-wedding; bride’s sisters guard the room door for money.
- Biday – Farewell: Emotional send-off of the bride; she offers rice to her mother before leaving.
- Bodhu Baran – Welcoming the Bride: Bride enters her new home with symbolic rituals like stepping on alta and milk to bless the home.
- Kaal Ratri – Night of Separation: After rituals, bride and groom sleep apart for one night to honor tradition.
- Bou-bhat – Acceptance of Responsibility: Groom offers bride food and gifts symbolizing his duties; reception follows in the evening.
- Phool-sajya – Night of Union: The couple’s room is decorated with flowers; they wear cotton attire and floral ornaments for the night.
