Gujarati Wedding Rituals
The wedding affair starts with exchanging Jaimaala’s twice. Unlike other Hindu weddings, Gujarati’s take four Pheras which are called Mangal Pheras. During Mangal Pheras, the couple circles the holy fire four times symbolizing ‘Dharma’, ‘Artha’, ‘Kama’ and ‘Moksha’.
Here are the list of Gujarati wedding functions:
- Chanlo Matli: The bride’s father and four male relatives visit the groom with gifts and vermillion dot (chandlo) to mark the wedding alliance.
- Gol Dhana: Engagement ceremony with jaggery and coriander seeds, ring exchange and blessings from five married women.
- Lagan Lakhvanu (Kankotri): The first wedding invite offered to god, followed by formal invites to guests.
- Mehndi: Henna ceremony at the bride’s home with music, dance and bridal mehndi.
- Sangeet Sandhya: Musical night with dance and garba for both families.
- Mandap Mahurat: Ganesh puja and prayer to Mother Earth for mandap setup at both homes.
- Griha Shanti: Puja at both houses to bless the couple's new journey.
- Pithi: Haldi ceremony with turmeric paste applied by family, followed by a ritual bath.
- Mameru: Bride’s maternal uncle gifts her saree, jewelry and sweets a day before the wedding.
- Varghodo: Groom’s baraat arrives with pomp; bride’s mother greets him with sweets and aarti, followed by the nose-pinch ritual.
- Jaimala: Bride and groom exchange flower garlands.
- Madhuparka: Groom is welcomed with a foot-wash ritual and fed panchamrut (holy drink).
- Antarpaat: A cloth between bride and groom is lowered so they can see each other for the first time at the mandap.
- Kanyadaan: Bride’s father gives her hand to the groom with heartfelt blessings.
- Hasta Milap: The bride’s saree is tied to the groom’s shawl; family showers petals and rice.
- Joota Churai: Bride’s sisters steal the groom’s shoes for fun and a playful ransom.
- Pheras: Couple walks around the holy fire four times; puffed rice is offered after each circle.
- Saptapadi: Seven sacred vows taken with seven steps, sealing their union.
- Vidaai: Emotional farewell as the bride leaves for her new home, throwing puffed rice over her head.
